  • After World War II, the regional process began in Europe, driven by the goals of economic cooperation and security, and has since accelerated the process of regional co-operation between independent nations, as well as the realization of interdependence.
  • This process started too late in the developing world. A similar regional organization is the South Asian Association for Original Co-operation (SAARC).
  • SAARC Idea: SAARC was established at the Dhaka Summit on December 8, 1985 as part of the brainstorming session of Bangladesh President Zia-ur-Rehman.
  • The main objective of SAARC: SAARC aims to co-operate in economic, social, cultural and scientific fields.
  • SAARC member countries: India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives and Sri Lanka. (Afghanistan joined later.)
  • SAARC Principle: To develop regional cooperation to resolve its own issues in the spirit of friendship, development and mutual respect. The aim is to speed up the economic and social process in their respective countries by making greater use of human resources and natural resources.
  • SAARC Headquarters: Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is the headquarters of SAARC.
