The origins of the Chipko movement:
Chipko is a mountain word, which means to stick.
In the mountainous tribal areas of north-east India, the government banned locals from cutting down forest products or trees for their livelihood and allowed private companies to cut down trees.

Under the leadership of a woman named Gauri Devi, a woman from the North East came together and started the Chipko movement.
